One small shape carries through these cabinets. The stepped square turns up in the brackets under the uppers and again at the end of every pull and k**b. On the doors, a crossed grid of muntins sits over textured glass, so the pattern doesn’t stop at the hardware.

A slab like this makes the first decision for you: the edge stays. The harder question is what holds it up without taking attention away from the wood.

We went with two steel arcs that cross under the top. From the side they nearly disappear and the slab carries the room. From the end you see the whole idea: two curves leaning into each other, doing the work quietly.

I met Cassandre at Paris Design Week as she launched her new brand, House of Cassandre. I loved these fans with the walnut, maple, and fir come together in a beautiful marquetry piece.

Take a look at what she’s creating: House of Cassandre

Paris kept pulling my eye to the places where one line turns into another. A panel becomes a curve. A leg grows out of a base. A chair back finds its way into the arm.

I kept looking at the transitions. Even with all the carving and detail, you can follow a line through the piece and see where the maker chose to take it next. That’s what gives the work its sense of movement.

It’s a useful question to bring back to our own shop: when a detail ends, what happens to the line?

One of our Paris Design Week stops at the Aldo Rossi exhibit at Le Grand Hôtel Cayré.

Rossi had a way of making everyday objects feel architectural. La Cupola, designed for Alessi in 1988, is a great example. Simple geometry, beautiful proportions, and that copper is fantastic.

The hotel was a great part of the experience too, beautiful interiors and absolutely worth checking out while in Paris.

Paul Hankar designed this dining table around 1898, and it is just fabulous

The top and apron are relatively restrained, but beneath them, the lines of the legs seem to flow through the entire piece, sweeping toward the floor, continuing underneath, and joining at the center.

The profiles are deep and beautifully smooth, giving those substantial legs a softness and sense of movement. It’s that contrast between the strong, straight geometry above and the flowing structure below that makes the table so good.

I just love this one

Paris Design Week - Looking for ideas to take back to the shop. Sometimes we hide how it’s made. Not in this case. Layers of wood are laminated together, left exposed at the edges, and then carved into the back to create a pattern that feels almost topographic. The material tells you how the piece was built.

A white kitchen only looks simple when all the difficult decisions disappear.

Here, the cabinetry moves through two rooms and maintains its rhythm, tying the spaces together while working around the architecture. The result feels calm, bright and beautifully resolved which is much harder to achieve than it looks.

The details that make the whole piece feel finished.

This custom wood grille provides the ventilation required for a wet bar w**e cooler without compromising the surrounding cabinetry.

Functional, intentional, and designed as part of the overall piece.

The smallest room in the house can become one of its most memorable.

It’s a good reminder that thoughtful design isn’t reserved for the rooms where we spend the most time. Sometimes the most unexpected spaces leave the strongest impression.
