Your throttle and shift should feel the same every time you use them. Smooth when you push it forward. A clean, positive click into gear. No grinding, no fighting, no slop.

Pay attention if you notice:
-It takes more effort than it used to
-It feels sticky, notchy, or loose
-Shifting into gear is harder or louder than normal
-The engine doesn't respond the way it should when you move the lever

Those changes usually come on slowly, so they're easy to get used to. But controls are something you need to trust, especially around the dock or in close quarters. If yours doesn't feel right, have it looked at before it becomes a problem on the water.

"Will this part work?" and "Is this the right part?" are two different questions.

A lot of parts will fit. Fewer of them are made for your engine, your model year, and the way marine engines work in salt and heat.
We take the time to match the part to the engine. Sometimes that means waiting a day for the correct one to come in instead of using something that's close. It's the difference between a repair that lasts and one that brings you back.

If you've ever wondered why we ask for your engine's year, model and serial number, that's why.

TUESDAY TIP: Check your navigation lights before the clocks change.

Daylight saving time ends Sunday, November 1. Sunset comes an hour earlier, and a lot of boaters who are used to getting home in daylight end up running after dark without planning for it.

Your nav lights have to work any time you're underway between sunset and sunrise, and in poor visibility. Here's a quick check:
~Turn them on at the dock: Red and green at the bow, white at the stern or masthead depending on your boat. All of them should come on.
~Look at them from outside the boat: A light that's dim, cloudy, or blocked by gear isn't doing its job.
~Wiggle the connections: Corrosion at the bulb socket or plug is the most common cause of a light that works "sometimes."
~Check the fuse or breaker: If a light is out, start there.
~Carry a spare: Spare bulbs and a backup light are cheap and can get you home legally and safely.

Two minutes at the dock beats finding out halfway home in the dark.

A new week is here which means new work will be brought in, but it all gets treated the same.
It starts with carefully listening to the complaint, hearing what if sounded like or felt like, and sometimes we give you a call if we have more pointed questions when we have eyes on the boat. An experienced ear can figure out a lot through a conversation. It's not always necessary but it's definitely a helpful tool. There's a whole lot more to repairs but they all start with a complaint.
And we are happy to listen, so give us a call to get on the schedule now before it fills up!

The dogs have reviewed the week's work and approved it. Their standards are high, but they can be bribed.

Thanks to everyone who trusted us with their boats this week. Enjoy the weekend, and we'll see you Monday.

A question we get a lot: "Can you tell me what's wrong over the phone?"

Honest answer: No, realistically we can't be sure without seeing the boat.

Plenty of problems look alike from the outside. A rough idle, a loss of power, or a hard start can each have several different causes. Guessing over the phone can send you down the wrong path and cost you money on parts you didn't need.

The job isn't done when the last bolt goes in around here.

No matter what type of repair is necessary there is a final check to ensure everything we handled for the repair works properly; whether that be electrical, leaks, checking gauges etc. It is all important and we can't deny catching a slip up but that is the importance of the final checks.

TUESDAY TIP: What's your plan if your electronics go dark?

Modern boats lean hard on screens. Chartplotter, GPS, depth, engine data, sometimes the radio too. They're great when they work. But a blown fuse, a loose connection, a dead battery, or a wave over the console can take them out in a second.

A few simple backups worth carrying:
~Handheld VHF radio. Charged, in a dry bag or holder, and you know how to use it. If your fixed radio goes down, this is how you call for help.
~Your phone, protected. A waterproof case or dry bag, a charging cable, and a navigation app downloaded ahead of time so it works without cell service.
~A paper chart of your home waters. Doesn't need batteries. Know roughly where the channels and shallow spots are. There are tons of videos of knowledgable people willing to explain how to read these charts online, find one that works for you.
~Know where you are. Every so often, glance at your position and landmarks. If the screen goes dark, you'll already have a good idea of where you are and how to get home.
~Spare fuses. Find out which fuses run your electronics and keep a few spares on board. A lot of "dead" electronics are just a blown fuse.

Ten minutes of prep now saves a stressful afternoon later.

Every season has its own kind of flow.
This time of year we start hearing from owners who used the boat less in the late summer heat and want to make sure it's right before the cooler months. And we hear from folks getting ready for family and friends coming down for the winter who want the boat ready to go.

Whatever kind of call yours is, we're happy to take it. There's room on the schedule right now.
