Good evening, everyone.
To our customers, new visitors, and those who may not know us personally, we want to address an unfortunate situation that occurred this afternoon at What A Find.
Earlier today, an individual was repeatedly sitting and lying down on one of our benches in front of the store. His movements appeared unusual and inconsistent, and because this behavior did not seem typical, I became concerned for his well‑being. I contacted my husband, and after reviewing our security footage and photos—none of which we will share publicly out of respect for the individual—we agreed it was best to request a police welfare check to ensure he was safe. This was not a 911 call, nor was it a report of wrongdoing.
When officers arrived and spoke with him, they determined he was simply a customer doing laundry at the neighboring laundromat and was not experiencing any issues. We were relieved to hear this.
Unfortunately, we later learned that a family member of the individual was upset that a welfare check had been requested. We understand their feelings, and we are sorry that this situation caused them distress. At the same time, we hope our community understands that we acted out of genuine concern for someone who appeared to be in possible distress. If we had ignored the situation and the individual had needed help, we would have regretted not acting.
To be clear:
The individual was not a customer of What A Find.
He was on our bench, directly in front of our store.
He was not ticketed, warned, or given any trespass notice.
Our only intention was to ensure his safety.
We are disappointed that this situation has led to negative comments about our business, but we felt it was important to share the facts openly rather than remain silent.
Moving forward, we will be reviewing how we handle situations involving individuals on our property, and we will also be evaluating whether the benches in front of the store continue to serve a positive purpose for our customers.
