These chess boards very special, due to the wood that is present in them. A few years ago we had the opportunity to build several pieces for the carnation village, utilizing wood that had been removed from the building itself. Out of that wood, we had several small cut offs that contained heart pine. This is old growth material that is no longer in existence. It can only be found in older buildings. I knew I wanted to utilize these pieces for something special. We arranged the pieces in their end grain orientation so that the growth rings would be visible. The epoxy colors play off two integral parts of Tupelo. The blue and gold represent the Tupelo Golden wave colors. The black and white colors play off two separate Tupelo themes. One is the carnation milk plant itself. When you think of milk cows you naturally think of the black and white cow 🐄. The second is Elvis Presley. Much of the art and memorabilia surrounding Elvis play off of the black and white colors. These turned out fabulous and it’s great to be able to preserve a piece of Tupelo history into functional art.

This is a design concept I’ve had in mind for quite some time. I love math, so using wood and epoxy to create geometric patterns is something I wanted to do. I took walnut pieces and cut each at 60 degree angles to create diamonds ♦️. This in itself is cool, but if you take 3 of those diamonds and place them together you get a hexagon. But the real magic happens by intentionally arranging the grain patterns. By placing the grain orientation in a certain arrangement, the 3 individual diamonds make a 3 dimensional cube. These were all meticulously organized into a form, evenly spaced, and then filled with black epoxy. The result is a stunning geometric top. These were paired with bases that also play off of the design. Each end table base is comprised of two triangles that intersect using half lap joinery. The result is a diamond in the center of the base. The coffee table likewise uses geometry to pair with the top. Utilizing 3 individual v-shaped alternating pieces, a diamond forms in the center of the base. If you love these pieces, they are available. Send us a message for pricing.
