Sometimes I have to run a sample of wood through the planer to show customers what it really looks like.
The process of drying and even storing lumber can result in quite a bit of oxidation or discoloration. As long as the Sawyer's job is done right, it's just superficial discoloration that goes away as soon as the woodworker touches it!

This particular mantle was cut 2 years prior. It was 8x13 and I trimmed it to 6x12. I've had very good success with them being dimensionally stable after the first year. If a beam like that doesn't have some nice cracks in it? Nope it's not ready.

Here's a pretty interesting byproduct we find when cutting Walnut stumps.

An hour of pressure washing was time well spent. But we still wrecked a saw chain, and used 5 sawmill blades milling this Walnut stump. It's par for the course. $220 in expendable supplies. Definitely not a normal hourly sawing deal! But in addition to some very highly figured r***e stock blanks we got some unique pieces for our woodworkers, artists and particularly for epoxy conneseurs.

Here's what we got usable from the Walnut stump and root in the previous visit video
Part 3. Something tells me this is going to be fun.

Black Walnut "carrots" plucked out of the ground, cleaned up and ready to mill

This was a pleasant surprise. I had the opportunity to mill the most beautiful bald cypress logs I've seen in quite a while. There was only a narrow strip of sapwood present. It's a Rich gold and yellow color.
These are 1x12s

It Mills about as fast as poplar. With good logs and my sawmill I'm pretty sure with enough help to keep the mill fed I could run 250+ board feet an hour and still get high quality straight cuts. It's fun. Especially after I've been cutting white oak and walnut for months.

"I've got five Cypress logs I need you to Mill" was the conversation. Well, Sir, you have exceeded my expectation!

Six 1400 pound packs of Columbia county Walnut ready to load out and go home. Still taking a tally on the final stacks but it's starting to point towards 1,200 board feet. It yielded pretty good- almost on top of Doyle scale despite a few squiggly logs.

This is a real winner for the landowner. Sure it costs some money to fell, buck, and haul these logs. And of course there's the fee for debarking, sawing, end treatments and cutting all the dunnage required (me). But with a few hours of good stacking and spraying with timbor, he will have $10,000 worth of old growth Walnut dry value. Not a bad stack to have sitting in your shop.

Dogs idea of helping with a brake job. When I use the other foot to defend myself that's when they get rough.

I took in a few more loads of Walnut they were slightly damaged in hurricane Helene. They weren't dead or on the ground, but they were lodged in other trees or leaning badly where they would eventually go down. It'll probably make close to 2000 board feet. This is one of two stacks.

And I'm supposed to be getting some stumps this time! Trimmed up and pressure washed. I'm going to try my hand at cutting Walnut r***e stock blanks from the root stock.
