Normally, here on our website, we mostly talk about things that are core to our business and the services we provide for our customers here in Washington DC, such as historic masonry restoration. That generally includes things like historic repointing and mortar refurbishment. Here on our blog though, once in a while, we have the opportunity to take a look at things that are a little bit different and unique. Often, those details that appear separate and different will show some insight into the work that we do here in contemporary times. Historic buildings have many similarities to the principles of contemporary construction and even historic work from times further back in history.

We looked at this old outdoor stone masonry fireplace / grill, a while back. The particular masonry construction hasn’t been properly restored or maintained for years but it’s a terrific example of masonry, built the same way for hundreds of years, back to historic times. It’s an example of relatively typical randomized ashlar masonry, but the majority of the individual stones are set similar to rectilinear or unitized ashlar masonry, at least with an outer face that has been cut in a near planar shape.

This past week, we looked at the rear facades and balconies at a set of buildings in a nearby urban area where renovations were underway to update and modify the existing row homes. Even though they’re existing historic row homes, the new construction used almost entirely modern methodologies of stick framing. The exteriors of those buildings were clad in a sheet metal panel and the underlayment that sheathed stud framing was made from a exterior gypsum board type material. Today, we’re looking at a similar but different type of project where a group of historic row homes were basically gutted on the interior and garages we’re built at the ground level.

The vast majority of our blogs and content here on our website, go into detail and look closely at historic masonry construction and restoration. Often we talk about masonry, brick, and mortar deterioration, repointing and tuck pointing restoration. Today though, we’re going to switch gears and we’ll look at and describe images of something different. We’re going to take a look at some urban buildings, that are right into the middle of the historic areas of the city. They are in the middle of reconstruction, but not just refurbishing and repairing, instead, the majority of historic buildings are being cut apart and demolished with only select parts remaining in fact.

A while back, we got to look at a interesting historic masonry building. Sadly, this masonry building has now been demolished. Like many architectural treasures in urban areas, they are complicated and expensive to maintain and where people do not value the unique nature of historic architecture, and or where funds are just not publicly available to preserve them, especially in poor parts of the cities of the east coast, these buildings fall into disrepair. Historic architecture is something that belongs to all of us, in a way, even if we do not own the actual property. We should treat these buildings with a higher regard and be willing to invest in historic preservation.

Here in the blog section of our website, this past week, we looked at several examples of bullseye and oculus openings in historic masonry. Today, for this week’s blog article here on our website, we’re looking at a very similar topic of Bullseye and Oculus type openings in historic masonry facades, but the big difference is that this week I’m looking at these type of openings in ashlar stone facade buildings. Last week we looked at this type of openings in rough cut stone and brick facades. Overall, the concept is very similar but here it’s used differently in an architectural context. As well, the styles of these buildings are vastly different.

In the past two week’s blogs, we looked at two different types of issues related to header failure, associated with lateral deflection and differential settlement. Particularly, last week, we looked at a sheared stone header split into three parts.

In this past week, we took a look at several different types of failed brick opening headers and talked about some of the issues related to lateral deflection and deterioration of historic brick mortar joints (and associated repointing or tuckpointing). Often historic brick mortar joint deterioration will lead to overall failures that are much more significant and almost reach the point of catastrophe. Brick pointing, by comparison, is just a very limited element of repair and restoration, much simpler than rebuilding after a catastrophic collapse, or failure. It’s interesting that something as simple as just masonry restoration can prevent something as major as collapse of a portion of a building.
