Marine football’s last coach shares program’s history in new exhibit 01/29/2026

“A lot of people who visit the museum hadn’t served in the Marine Corps, but football is a touchstone for every American,” said Keil Gentry, director of the National Museum of the Marine Corps.

This week, a new display was unveiled to honor the Marine Corps football team in Quantico, which played until 1972 & produced 21 All Pros in the early days of the NFL, including Hall of Famer Art Donovan.

South St. Paul native Mike Farrell — Capt. B.J. Hunnicutt on ‘M*A*S*H’ — honored for Marine Corps service 10/21/2025

“Since we were old enough to talk about it, we wanted to be in the Marines. We always looked at the Marines as the glorious fighting brigade.”

Before he was Capt. B.J. Hunnicutt on the smash hit tv show M*A*S*H, he was Mike Farrell, an 18-year-old who graduated high school & joined the Marines with his good friend.

Farrell is one of the being highlighted by the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation to mark the U.S. Marine Corps' 250th anniversary in November.

The St. Paul Pioneer Press interviewed Farrell last week for this in-depth feature on his life and the impact of the Marines on his career:

“The annual birthday cake-cutting ceremony is a special ceremony for every Marine, as it’s a reminder of why we made this commitment to our nation and our service,” said Andrew McCormack, Commandant of the Marine Corps League Department of Minnesota.

To celebrate the Marines' 250th anniversary on Nov. 10, the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation is partnering with all 50 states & the American Bakers Association to host cake-cutting ceremonies throughout the month.

"Together, we’re helping kids return to school on Monday nourished, confident, and ready to thrive."

This week, the Baltimore Hunger Project received a $150,000 grant from the Maximus Foundation, as one of 10 Impact Grant awardees for non-profits dedicated to fighting food insecurity.

The organization's founder, Lynne B. Kahn, said the funds will help them "remove barriers to learning by ensuring children have reliable access to nutritious food over the weekend."
