Steelcase Series 2 vs Herman Miller Verus

I had a great question come in comparing the Steelcase Series 2 vs Herman Miller Verus. Two chairs evenly matched on price, with some key differences in options included.

These aren’t chairs that gets compared often, so if you’re searching for something new under $1000 it could be an opportunity to find a solid chair from a premium brand.

The Verus features an upgraded mechanism compared to the Series two. 4 tilt limiter positions, plus the upright locked position is nice. It also has 7 different tilt tension presets.

The Series two only has upright lock and two weight activated tilt modes. For me at 160 lbs they feel very similar, with the standard mode and boost mode.

Series 2 comes with a headrest as an add-on which bumps the price almost identical to the Verus. It also features the four-way arms similar to the Leap and Amia.

I go through a few more things in the video as well. If you have questions like this and want me to compare other chairs just let me know.

So I had a question about the Elabest x100 fitting someone who is 5’11” and 275 lbs and they wondered if it would fit them. They currently use Steelcase chairs at work and mentioned they don’t love it.

This is a great question and I want to answer it by showing you why getting another standard size office chair will not be a good solution to their problem.

The Elabest is 20” wide in the seat and sits narrow because of the hard frame. The padded seat is better, but still likely too narrow.

The BTOD Duolc is 21.5” wide with a padded seat and gives you more space. But still might not be great because of your hips and butt. It will feel much bigger, but this is why measuring your hips and butt are so important for fit.

The Libernovo Maxis is 23” wide and you can see just how much bigger it is and why it’s a better option if you need a lot more space after measuring your body.

Measure first and make sure you get something you can actually fit in comfortably that doesn’t feel restricting. Otherwise you’ll hate the chair.

I’m going to try to bring is some wider chairs around the $300-$400 range to see if there are some decent budget options out there. But hopefully this helps a bit in the meantime.

Elabest x100 All Mesh vs Fabric Seat Mesh Back

Just brought in the fabric seat version of the Elabest x100 to compare to the all mesh. This is a nice alternative if you don’t like sitting on a mesh seat.

Seat pad is pretty firm. Has some shape to it as well. You still get the flip up arms and depth adjustable lumbar and multi dimensional headrest.

If you’re looking for something that doesn’t have crazy aggressive lumbar the depth adjustment feature is nice. But you can also set it to be pretty aggressive as well.

Both chairs allow you to build it with the seat pan in three different depth positions. There is not depth adjustment feature to make changes without rebuilding the chair.

The fabric seat version doesn’t include a footrest. Otherwise the rest of the chair is basically the same. For anyone concerned about the Colamy Atlas or PortoArc EC 200’s lumbar being too specific this is a good alternative.

The headrest has a ton of range, it goes down as short as 24” off the seat in the shortest setting. If you are closer to the 5’1”-5’3” make sure to verify where you need it to fit comfortably.

I had a few people ask about the Colamy Aether so I bought one to try it.

Like most of the Colamy products, it is well done, especially compared to other chairs at similar price points. The fit and finish is really nice.

When it comes to comfort, I personally still think the Atlas is the better chair. After about four hours I couldn’t sit on the seat pad. It pushed back too much and I couldn’t get comfortable with the lumbar (I like a lot of lower support but this was too much in one spot).

Since I posted the long video showing all of the chairs in the office this week on Reddit, a lot of people have asked me the difference between the Leap v2 and the Leap v2 plus.

The standard Leap v2 is a more comfortable option compared to the Leap v2 plus for most IMO. If you need the extra space, the Plus could work, but the chairs sit quite a bit differently.

The base on the Plus has a steel five-star base. Plus, the seat swing arm and the mechanism are beefed up as well. It’s a tank.

Biggest reasons why they feel different:

Overall size difference (Plus is massive as expected)
Back shape
Backrest vertical positioning
Tilt range limited + seat angle
Back flexibility + pad thickness
Front edge flexibility (wood core on Plus)

Let me know if you have any other chairs you want to see compared like this.

Edit: I meant tilt not recline 😊.

You asked, so I bought the CLOUVOU and put it head-to-head with the ProtoArc.

I said in a past post I’d grab the CLOUVOU and give you my honest take. Both sell for about the same price, but in my opinion the ProtoArc is the better chair overall on comfort, value, and build.

We’ve got hundreds of chairs sitting in the office, so if these comparisons are helpful, I’m happy to keep doing them. Just tell me which two you want to see next.
