It’s 100°F in the cockpit. The sun is cooking you alive.

And somewhere along the way, “just drink less” became part of the mission plan.

Tactical dehydration has been normalized in military aviation for far too long — and it’s costing us in safety, performance, and long-term health.

At AFA, our own Lisa Jorgensen Christensen broke down what aircrew are really dealing with in the cockpit, and how Skydrate — the Air Force’s program of record for hands-free, automated bladder relief — is finally changing that conversation.

This isn’t about comfort. It’s about:

✅ Flight safety
✅ Hydration & human performance
✅ Mission readiness
✅ Giving aircrew real options

Take a few minutes to watch. Your attention belongs on the mission — not on managing discomfort.

It’s time to end tactical dehydration. For good.

The Aircraft Evolved. Bladder Relief Should Too.

Modern military aviation has transformed. We have more capable aircraft, longer missions, better sensors, better weapons, better survival equipment, and more sophisticated flight gear.

Yet for generations, one solution to bladder relief remained remarkably primitive:

Drink less.

Hold it.

Wait until landing.

That is not a human performance strategy. SKYDRATE was developed to replace the workaround with capability with a hands free and automated bladder relief system... not a fancier piddle-pack.

The objective is not complicated.

Allow aircrew to hydrate appropriately.

Allow them to manage bladder relief while secured in the aircraft.

Reduce an unnecessary physiological distraction.

Keep their attention where it belongs. On the aircraft. On the threat.
On the mission.

We should demand the same evolution from human performance equipment that we demand from every other system our aviators depend upon.

Stop adapting the aviator to the problem.

Eliminate the problem.

Hydration Is Easy to Recommend. Bladder Relief Is Harder to Solve.

Tell an aviator to stay hydrated. 💦

Simple.

Now put that aviator in flight equipment, secure them in an ejection seat, surround them with restraints and survival gear, increase the workload, extend the sortie, and remove access to a bathroom for hours.

The conversation changes quickly. 🥵

Tactical dehydration was never simply a water problem.

It is an equipment problem.

If we expect aircrew to hydrate appropriately, we need to provide a practical way to manage the inevitable result without creating another cockpit task.

That is the problem SKYDRATE was designed to address.

Hands free bladder relief. 🫲

Integration with military flight equipment. 🪖

Through suit capability. ❄️

Male and female solutions that are designed around the realities of military aviation. 🚀

Because telling aircrew to drink more water without solving bladder relief is not a solution.

It is advice.

Do not manage tactical dehydration. End it.

From Workaround to Capability

For decades, aviators developed their own solutions to bladder relief.

💦 Drink less.

🛑 Hold it.

📅 Plan around it.

🛬 Wait until landing.

Those were workarounds created because aircrew had limited alternatives.

Military aviation has evolved.

The missions are longer. Aircraft are more capable. Flight equipment is more sophisticated. The demands placed on aircrew continue to increase. Our approach to human physiology should evolve with them.

SKYDRATE turns bladder relief from something the aviator has to work around into a capability that can be incorporated into mission preparation and flight equipment.

That changes the conversation.

Instead of asking how long an aviator can tolerate dehydration or bladder urgency, we can ask how we equip that aviator to remain hydrated, focused, and physiologically prepared throughout the mission.

We stopped accepting workarounds in nearly every other critical area of military aviation.

It is time to stop accepting them here.

Built for Military Aviation

There is a significant difference between equipment that works in a demonstration and equipment designed for the realities of military aviation.

The cockpit is not forgiving.

🤌 Limited space.

💺 Restraints.

🚀 Flight equipment.

🥽 Protective ensembles.

🔥 High workload.

⌚️ Long missions.

And very little tolerance for equipment that creates another problem for the aviator. SKYDRATE was developed specifically around those realities. From hands free operation to integration with military flight equipment and through suit capability, the objective has always been the same:

Allow aircrew to manage bladder relief while remaining secured in the aircraft and focused on the mission.

Because solving tactical dehydration requires more than encouraging aircrew to drink water. It requires equipment that works where aviators actually operate.

In the aircraft.

In their flight gear.

During the mission.

Built around the aviator. Designed around the mission.

Stop Treating Tactical Dehydration Like a Pilot Problem

If aircrew intentionally reduce fluid intake because bladder relief is difficult during flight, telling them to hydrate better does not solve the problem. It simply gives them conflicting requirements.

Stay hydrated.

Stay strapped in.

Stay focused.

Manage your equipment.

Complete the mission.

And somehow manage bladder relief along the way.

The better approach is to give aircrew equipment that allows those requirements to coexist. SKYDRATE provides male and female aircrew with a hands free bladder relief capability designed for the military aviation environment.

The goal is straightforward.

Allow aviators to hydrate appropriately before and during demanding missions without making bladder relief another problem they have to solve in the cockpit. Tactical dehydration should not be treated as a lack of discipline by the aviator.

It is an equipment problem that deserves an equipment solution. Give aircrew the tools the NEED before they will NEED them!

Stop asking aircrew to work around physiology. Give them the tools to manage it.

The Solution Has to Work With the Mission!

A bladder relief system is only useful if aircrew can actually use it in the operational environment.

🪖 Flight equipment.

💺 Restraints.

😷 Protective ensembles.

✈️ Limited cockpit space.

🚀 High workload.

😴 Long missions.

🙈 Privacy.

SKYDRATE was developed around the demands of military aviation, giving aircrew a hands-free option for bladder relief while remaining secured in the aircraft.

The system is designed to integrate with flight equipment and includes through suit capability for missions requiring additional protective ensembles.

That matters because the answer to tactical dehydration cannot simply be telling aviators to drink more water.

If we want aircrew to hydrate appropriately, we also need to give them a practical way to manage what happens afterward.

Solve the entire problem.

Not just half of it.

Hydration requires a bladder relief solution built for the mission.

The Mission Does Not End When the Bladder Is Full

Long sorties demand more than fuel and aircraft endurance.

They demand human endurance.

Aircrew may spend hours secured in flight equipment, managing complex tasks while operating in an environment where even basic physiological needs can become difficult to address.

Historically, some aviators have approached that problem by drinking less. But reducing fluid intake to avoid bladder relief creates a compromise that modern aviation should not have to accept.

SKYDRATE is designed to help remove that compromise by giving aircrew a hands-free bladder relief capability during flight. The result is a practical option for managing bladder relief without making the aviator choose between hydration and the demands of the cockpit.

Aircraft endurance continues to improve.

Mission complexity continues to increase.

Our approach to supporting the human inside the aircraft needs to keep pace.

Extend the mission without asking the aviator to fight basic physiology.

Bladder Relief Should Not Require a Break From the Mission

In a tactical aircraft, there is no convenient time to stop flying.
The Aircraft Commander may be managing formation, monitoring fuel, communicating with the crew, tracking threats, or preparing for the next phase of the mission.

Basic physiology does not wait for a quiet moment. For too long, aircrew have worked around this problem by limiting fluids before flight or delaying bladder relief until landing.

SKYDRATE offers a different approach.

Its hands-free bladder relief system is designed to allow aircrew to manage bladder relief while remaining strapped into the aircraft.

No need to make dehydration part of the mission plan.

No need to treat bladder urgency as an unavoidable safety of flight distraction.

The objective is simple: support normal hydration and allow the aviator to manage a basic physiological need without unnecessarily interrupting the mission.

Stay strapped in. Stay focused. Stay mission ready.
