Meet Kay-

Her colleagues call her Kay, the students call her Ms.Twelve. Either way she responds,

"How can I help you?"

Kay likes schools - a lot. In fact, in this crazy world she lives in, she never leaves the school premises. As you can imagine, Kay knows her staff very well! She understands that the teachers always want to rearrange, repair and restock their classrooms, the students are in constant movement, and the custodians are tired of placing tennis balls on the bottom of the chairs. Kay is also familiar with the usual budget limitations educators face (her peers call her a penny-pincher, but she does the best with what she has!) Kay will help make due for you too! So take a look around, ask questions or give us a call - Kay and the Kay-Twelve team are always here to help. If you don't see something you're looking for, just ask Kay! She will know where to find it!

Superintendents, architects, educational planners and K-12 advocates have put their names behind Radically Student Centered™.

It’s the first book to define Learning Space Integration: the work of keeping a school’s learning vision intact from the first conversation to the first day of school.

These endorsements are just a preview. There are more waiting inside, before you even reach chapter one!

Thank you, Dr. Michael A. Cardona, Prakash Nair, Mark Goodman, Jolene Levin and Brenda Swirczynski, for standing behind this work.

If you plan, design, lead, or build learning environments, this one belongs on your desk.

It's here! Our new book, Radically Student Centered™: Learning Space Integration for Lasting Impact, is out now.

It's built on one simple idea — school spaces should be designed around how students actually learn, engage, and grow.

If you're a teacher, principal, board member, or parent who has ever walked into a brand-new building and wondered, "Why doesn't this work the way we hoped?" — this one's for you.

And if you're part of the planning process and want to make sure that doesn't happen in your school, it's time to start asking the right questions before the building ever opens.

Every Ironman, every day. 🎉

Congratulations to the Steel Valley School District community on your new elementary school! Barrett and Park, together under one roof — with flexible classrooms, outdoor learning centers, STREAM spaces, and learning stairs that tell the story of the Valley.

"When you see all these ideas here, you can see them in action and you just feel outstanding. You feel like now we can really, really give back to our students."

It was an honor to partner with your teachers and leaders from the first pilot classroom to opening day. Watch the recap 👇

Middle school is one of the hardest design problems in education.

The developmental needs of an eleven-year-old and a fourteen-year-old are genuinely different. The social dynamics are intense. The space has to hold belonging and independence at the same time, for students who are still figuring out what both of those feel like.

James Liebman of HMFH Architects has been solving that problem for 29 years.

On the latest episode of the Better Learning Podcast, host Jessica Westerduin sits down with James to talk about what it actually takes to design a middle school that works. His most recent project: Chapman Middle School in Massachusetts. LEED Gold certified. 1,470 students. The largest middle school in the state.

The room makes a decision about students before anyone says a word.

Most of the time, that decision is: your preferences don't factor in here.

We talk a lot about student advocacy. But there's a gap between advocating for students and building environments that teach students to advocate for themselves.

That gap lives, in part, in the physical space.

New blog on choice architecture, student agency, and what it looks like when the room itself becomes the most important advocate in it.

On July 9, 2023, a catastrophic flash flood hit Antietam School District. What happened next is the kind of story that doesn't make it into leadership textbooks but probably should.

In the latest episode of the Better Learning Podcast, host Mark Barga, EdD sits down with Superintendent Dr. Tim Matlack, Director of Facilities Ken Bonkoski, and Architect Phil Leinbach to talk about how a small, resource-limited district turned one of the worst days in its history into an opportunity to reimagine what their school could be.

It's a conversation about crisis, community, and what it actually takes to rebuild with purpose.

Billions are being spent on school construction and renovation. And yet, a familiar pattern keeps emerging: months after opening, flexible furniture gets pushed back into rows, collaboration zones become storage, and beautifully designed spaces get quietly adapted back to what's familiar.

The issue isn't the design. In most cases, the design is exceptional. The issue is alignment.

The Summer 2026 issue of Learning By Design digs into exactly that gap — and what it looks like when architecture, pedagogy, furniture, and operations are connected from the start rather than pieced together after the fact.

If you've ever asked why a new building didn't change things the way everyone expected, this one is for you.

Watch what happens when a student decides to move.

She's working at a table. He's in a flexible seating area behind her. Then he gets up and joins. No prompting. No permission slip. The space made it possible, and the moment made it natural.

That's not an accident. That's design.

There's a cost when you design in the status quo. It doesn't show up on a budget sheet. It shows up in the student who has learned to tolerate school rather than be inspired by it, the one who sits in a space that was never really designed with them in mind and has adjusted accordingly.

When space and pedagogy don't align, you hit a ceiling on student growth that no curriculum can move. You can hire better teachers, adopt better programs, and run better PD. The room still wins.

The question isn't whether your school has a learning vision. Most do. The question is whether your physical environment is built to support it, and whether the right people are accountable for keeping those two things connected from planning all the way through occupancy.

That's what it means to lead as a Learning Space Integrator. And that's what our new book is built around.

Good school design doesn't start with a floor plan.

It starts with a question: what do we actually want students to be able to do here?

In the latest episode of the Better Learning Podcast, Matt Rogers sits down with Candice Leinneweber, Director of Design at MA+ Architecture and 2025 EdMarket NextGen Award winner, to talk about what it takes to design learning spaces that hold up. Not just aesthetically. Functionally. Years after move-in day.

Candice's take: the spaces that last are the ones built around a clear vision from the beginning. When that foundation is missing, no amount of good design can compensate for it.

Worth a listen for school leaders, architects, and anyone who has ever inherited a space that looked great on paper and underperformed in practice.

What does Radically Student Centered™ actually mean?

It sounds like a question everyone already knows the answer to. But when you actually stop and ask, the answers are worth sitting with.

We asked our team. Leesa Smith, our Lead Installation Manager, shares:

"Radically Student Centered means placing the needs, experiences, and success of students at the heart of every decision, ensuring that every action, investment, and learning environment is intentionally designed to help students thrive."

It’s a simple question that’s worth asking more often, out loud and across your whole team, not just the people in the room when the vision gets written.
