FORBIDDEN BRANCH TROPHY
WINNER 2026

Scott Bredin

THE STORY:

In April 2017 34 South Africans travelled to the 8th World Bonsai Convention in Saitama City, Japan. Within the group was the African Bonsai Association demonstrator, Hannes Fritz. Hannes' demonstration was to be on a very old Juniper, prepared by the great master, Masahiko Kimura. Kimura's instruction to Hannes was not to remove a certain branch from the Juniper. This hindered Hannes' design, and he was torn between honouring Kimura's instruction and fulfilling his obligation to demonstrate his talent. Hannes chose the latter option, and this branch is now preserved as the "Forbidden Branch" following in the African style and spirit of bonsai.
