Who carries South African design forward?

As part of Design Week Cape Town 2026 Design Week South Africa, Wunders and Cape Cobra invite you to join us for a candid morning conversation with Justine Schäfer of Cape Cobra Leathercraft, Lucie de Moyencourt of Lucie Demoyencourt, Sindiso Khumalo of Sindiso Khumalo and Bianca Shapiro of WUNDERS.

Spanning leather, ceramics, fashion and furniture, we’ll be talking about what we inherit, what we challenge and what we choose to put into the world.

What deserves preserving? When does tradition hold us back? Who gets the credit, and who does the making? And when we say South African design has a future, whose future are we building?

After more than 40 years of handcrafting furniture in Cape Town, our finest achievements aren’t just the pieces that leave our factory floors, it’s the relationships we build along the way.

Salomé Knijnenburg of Salomé Knijnenburg Interiors is a long-standing friend of Wunders, celebrated for creating truly striking residential and commercial spaces. Over the years, we’ve loved seeing our signature designs take pride of place in her projects.

For years, so much of our story had lived on the showroom floor. This became the place where design met manufacturing. Where you could sit in the furniture, feel the fabrics, compare timber finishes and start imagining what a piece might look like in your project.

It’s where conversations turn into concepts, samples are spread across tables, and projects slowly start to take shape.

We asked the Wunders team what makes them proud to be South African, and their answers reminded us of the beauty of who we are.

From the rich mosaic of our different cultures to the food and music that bring us together, our heritage is woven into everything we do. In our Cape Town factory, this spirit is alive every single day. It lives in the conversations shared over lunch, the distinct traditions each person brings to the floor, and the stories carried by the worn-smooth, handmade ‘bankies’ our artisans use while mastering their craft.

We are a multicultural, multidimensional team. We come from different backgrounds and carry different traditions, yet we are connected by a shared dedication to our craft and a profound pride in calling South Africa home.

Our latest mmakesspace products, designed by 𝐋𝐄𝐙𝐀 Sustainable Designer, look at the creative possibilities that exist when repurposing off-cuts from our manufacturing process.

Mohair supplied by Woven Waste and leather have found their way into slippers and beautiful scatter cushions, while fabric offcuts have been transformed into bags, purses and even hats.

Our MakeSpace initiative helps keep us accountable. It reminds us to look at what we’re using, what we’re throwing away and where there might be an opportunity to do things differently.

We know there is still a long road ahead to being truly sustainable, both as a business and as a planet. That said, sometimes change can start with something as small as a pair of slippers.
