meet the makers: Meyer von Wielligh | design week south africa

design week south africa starts today. to mark it, we’re introducing the people behind the pieces, starting with Abrie von Wielligh and Norman Meyer.

they met as furniture design students at furntech in george. when their course called for work experience at a manufacturer, they started their own workshop instead. some 15 years later, they still design and build on the garden route, where furniture makers have long worked with indigenous wood.

each piece starts with the timber. they use only registered wood and choose every raw board themselves, then let its qualities shape the design: organic lines, intricate textures and careful detailing and finishing.

“we believe that each tree has a story to tell.”

for every piece of furniture they sell, a tree is planted in return.

the table everything gathers around: morning coffee, sunday papers, the book you keep meaning to finish.

low-slung walnut with softly rounded edges, on a base that branches out like roots and settles flat on the floor. traditional joinery holds it all together, quietly.
