The unexpected joy of finishing a project that has opened another door in my heart.
Being involved in the African Trilateral Internationalisation Project was a growth experience for me personally. It also catalysed a pivot for my small business and a transfer of ‘my’ Pad Perch to ‘the’ Pad Perch, even though I am still the innovator. I am super happy to have it in the hands of Shonaquip Social Enterprise for scaling.
If I was not visually impaired I would never have been on such a journey from product idea to experimentation in our garage to seeing it helping other visually impaired people in another country. It’s a myriad of little stories interwoven with family, friends, acquaintances and ‘right time, right place’ encounters, especially and the .
For me, product development has been like trying to herd a cat. There are so many wrong turns, seemingly wasted time or energy, or both and many, many learning curves.
Innovating from a user need rather than an engineering speciality has had its challenges. I am incredibly grateful to Bhatnagar from the Global Disability Innovation Hub at UCL for inviting me to be part of this pilot study and for supporting African made Assistive Technology that is relevant to local context.
Thank you Hub team! Thank you Kenya trainers Gathoni from , Mugenya and Pamela from , Victor Ovamba from USIU and Leonard Dawafula from NCPWD for your contribution to this project and the many visually impaired people you help each day.
James helped me with planning and Wood I could not have completed without your peaceful support.
I remember chatting to a tenacious wholesaler saying, “I don’t want to just sell a product, I want to love people”. She replied, “Is this product not a way to love people?”
I now think that every product should make people feel loved or encouraged in some way. This will be a future start line as I work alongside Wood on awareness for Inclusive Design into the Aging Sector…the unavoidable destination for us all.
Thanks webster for standing by me, hearing my nutty ideas and encouraging me to be simultaneously gentle and brave.
Now, a little living within the lines before the next leg: Training Trainers who can help people with low vision to use their phones and tablets to increase independence and dignity.
