When an architect designs their own home, every line matters. Collaborating with Yvette van Zyl (Yvette van Zyl Architecture ) on her Mossel Bay residence was a seamless merging of architectural intent and bespoke joinery.

Starting with our minimalist kitchen island, the design focuses on removing the excess, interpreting traditional joinery for modern living through African Teak (Iroko). The cabinetry works hard behind the scenes, integrating the scullery into the main back wall and wrapping around into living room wall panelling for complete spatial harmony.

Quiet, functional, and rich in natural character.

Warmth, texture, and organic luxury E m e r a l d 🌿 R a v i n e 🍃✨

The kitchen was designed to feel like a collection of fine furniture rather than a standard fitted kitchen. The goal was to create a space that melts effortlessly into the open-plan living area, setting a grounded, tranquil mood for the entire home.

Every touchpoint celebrates the quiet beauty of natural timber:
✨ Soft, solid oak cabinetry finished in natural oils to bring out the wood’s inner character.
✨ A handcrafted woven oak island detail with exposed traditional joinery, adding tactile depth to the center of the room.
✨ A striking live-edge rustic oak island top anchored by a natural tree trunk base.
✨ Stone-clad floating shelves and leathered countertops that bring raw, elemental texture to the stove area.

Paired with the Meyer Von Wielligh Collection Umthi Bar Stools, the space feels alive, relaxed and connected to nature.

Functional artistry at E m e r a l d 🌿 R a v i n e 🪵✨

Designed by Kitchens by Meyer von Wielligh the concept was to treat the kitchen as a functional furniture piece that seamlessly integrates into the open-plan living area, enhancing the warm, relaxed atmosphere of the home.

The details reflect traditional joinery techniques:
🌿 Woven Oak Island: A hand-crafted solid oak woven panel paired with mortise and tenon jointing on the frame and legs.
🌳 Live-Edge Feature: A rustic oak live-edge slab wrapping around a natural tree trunk base.
☕️ Freestanding Coffee Station: Designed with open slatted shelving for a lightweight, airy feel.
🪨 Textured Surfaces: Stone-clad floating shelves along the stove wall, complemented by 20mm Rustenburg Leathered granite countertops.
✨ Cabinetry & Hardware: Exterior cabinetry built in solid oak with a rich natural oiled finish, fitted with precision Blum South Africa hardware.

To complete the look, the homeowners paired the island with the signature Umthi Bar Stools by Meyer Von Wielligh Collection tying together the interior design with the ancient coastal forests of the Crags

Every room in a home deserves the same thoughtful consideration, down to the last detail.

In our recent project, Tussen Berg en Oseaan, the two guest bedrooms were treated to the exact same level of style and design as the main living spaces. We crafted open modular closets in warm, solid oak: transforming functional storage into an expressive piece of architectural furniture.

In the en-suite bathrooms, the story continues with sleek floating vanities, finished with exposed end-grain wood to bring texture, craftsmanship, and a quiet luxury to the space. ✨
