From Wed 6 May, South Africans face another sharp fuel hike, with diesel set to exceed R35 per litre. The impact will be felt particularly in diesel-dependent sectors like transport, logistics and agriculture and will also drive up cost of living in the country.

🗣️ Henry van der Merwe, chairman of the South African Petroleum Retailers Association (SAPRA), says the increase is driven by higher global oil prices amid ongoing geopolitical tensions. Temporary fuel levy relief offers some cushioning but won’t fully offset the impact. From 1 July, the levy is set to return to R3.93 per litre, underscoring the need for longer term solutions.

👉 That’s where CHARGE Holdings believes the conversation must shift.

CHARGE, which operates Zero Carbon Charge and Zero Carbon Logistics, has warned that extending short term levy relief comes at a high fiscal cost and fails to address the structural vulnerability of SA’s transport economy. The country currently spends ~R500bn a year on petrol and diesel, much of it on imported energy.

🗣️ As Joubert Roux, co-founder and chair of CHARGE, puts it: “Electric vehicles are not just an environmental choice anymore – they are increasingly the financially rational one.”

🛣️ CHARGE is backing this view with infrastructure, rolling out a national network of off grid, solar powered EV charging stations for both passenger vehicles and heavy logistics fleets. The phased rollout will begin with 60 stations on major transport routes, expanding to 120 over time, with the first corridor sites along the N3 between Johannesburg and Durban launching in May 2026.

“By generating energy at the point of demand, we’re creating a system that’s more resilient, more predictable and ultimately more affordable,” Roux says.
