On 5 June we celebrate World Environment Day. The ARC-PHP has a long and proud history of protecting the environment and our unique ecosystems and biodiversity in South Africa through the development of host-specific biological control agents against invasive alien plants and cosmopolitan insect pests of agriculture and forestry. The use of biological control in an integrated management strategy against target invasive alien plants and pest insects has proven to be a cost-effective and environmentally sustainable method of control compared with the repeated application of broad-spectrum pesticides. The ARC-PHP also undertakes research on our South African honeybees to monitor the health and wellbeing of these essential service providers in our environment. In addition, the ARC-PHP is the custodian of the National Collections of Insects, Arachnids, Fungi, Rhizobia, Plant viruses and bacteria where we catalog and curate the unique and wonderful biological diversity we have in South Africa. We are therefore very privileged to live in a country with a such wide range of environments that is home to our rich and unique biodiversity, so we encourage all South Africans to celebrate World Environment Day.
