Swine Dysentery is a serious intestinal disease of pigs that causes bloody diarrhea, weight loss, and poor growth. It mostly affects grower and finisher pigs (8–16 weeks old).

Cause

It is caused by bacteria called Brachyspira hyodysenteriae, which infects the large intestine of pigs.

Signs / Symptoms

❌Bloody or dark diarrhea (dysentery)
❌Mucus in f***s
❌Loss of appetite
❌Weakness and dehydration
❌Weight loss / poor growth
❌Some pigs may die if severe

How it Spreads

❌Contaminated f***s
❌Dirty pens, feeders, water
❌Carrier pigs (pigs that look healthy but carry the bacteria)
❌Rodents and poor farm hygiene

Also:
✅Give clean water with electrolytes
✅Isolate sick pigs
✅Clean and disinfect the pen

Prevention

✅Maintain strict hygiene in the pig house
✅Quarantine new pigs before mixing
✅Control rats and rodents
✅Avoid overcrowding

Some might simply answer: "It's mating time," but the scientific truth is much deeper... Why do they stay stuck together in this strange way? 🤔

✋ There's no shame in science! Understanding this phenomenon is the first step towards respecting and treating the creatures around us properly.

🧬 Scientific Explanation:

During dog mating, what's known as "copulatory tie" occurs, a unique physiological stage that only occurs in certain mammals such as dogs, wolves, and foxes.

🔹 After the male's p***s enters the female, a gland called the bulbus glandis swells inside the p***s, trapping it inside the va**na.

🔒 This entrapment acts as a natural "biological lock" that prevents immediate separation. The two dogs remain attached for several minutes, sometimes up to half an hour.
One may move at an angle opposite the other, which is completely normal to protect the reproductive organs during expansion and contraction.

⚠️ Note: This stage is not painful, but it is very delicate. Any attempt to force separation could result in serious lacerations and severe bleeding.

Heartwater (Also called Cowdriosis)

1. Cause (Etiology)
Heartwater is caused by a bacteria-like organism called Ehrlichia ruminatum. It is spread by ticks, especially the Amblyomma ticks.

2. Economic importance.
- Sudden deaths of valuable animals
- Loss of productivity (milk, meat)
- Expensive treatment and prevention
- Loss of young stock

3. Transmission
- Spread through bites from infected Amblyomma ticks
- Ticks pick it from infected animals and spread to others
- Not spread directly between animals

4. Animals affected
- Cattle
- Goats
- Sheep
- Wild ruminants (less often)

5. Clinical signs.

Per-Acute form (Very fast):
- Sudden death
- Convulsions
- Diarrhea

Sub-Acute form:
- High fever lasting days
- Coughing
- Breathing difficulty (fluid in lungs)
- May recover or die in 1–2 weeks

Subclinical form
- Seen in resistant breeds
- Mild fever or no signs

6. Postmortem lesions (After death)
- Fluid around the heart (hydropericardium)
- Fluid in chest (hydrothorax)
- Fluid in abdomen (ascites)
- Small bleeding spots in intestines (petechiae, hemorrhages)
- Brain swelling and congestion

7. Differential diagnosis (Look-alike diseases)
- Rabies
- Tetanus
- Poisoning
- Meningitis
- Babesiosis
- East Coast Fever (ECF)

8. Prevention
- Regular tick control (spraying, dipping)
- Use tick-free pastures when possible
- Isolate and monitor new or sick animals
- Early RX with oxytetracycline helps save infected animals. But late RX after nervous signs is not effective.

Early detection and veterinary help are key to reducing losses from Heartwater.
