The European Federation of Geologists (EFG) has joined Hydrogen Europe and 32 other organisations in co-signing an open letter to the European Commission, calling for natural hydrogen to be explicitly recognised in the forthcoming revision of the EU Hydrogen Strategy.

Presented during European Hydrogen Week in Brussels on 28 October 2026, the letter highlights the potential of naturally occurring hydrogen as a domestic low-carbon energy resource and the need for a coordinated European approach to exploring its geological and commercial potential.

The signatories call for clearer regulatory recognition, increased exploration investment, more predictable permitting procedures and improved access to geological data.

EFG's support highlights the essential role of geoscience expertise in assessing emerging energy resources and informing Europe's energy transition.

26/10/2026

The European Federation of Geologists (EFG) will participate in the 31st United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP31), taking place from 9 to 20 November 2026 in Antalya, Türkiye.

Building on its engagement in previous editions, EFG will contribute to international discussions on the role of geoscience in climate action, sustainable development and translating climate commitments into practical solutions.

A significant milestone this year is the contribution to an official UNFCCC side-event. The session, International Cooperation Safeguarding Sustainable Development in a Changing Arctic, will provide an important platform for bringing geological expertise into global discussions on Arctic sustainability, science diplomacy and international cooperation, drawing on experience from EU-funded projects including SPECS and BOREAS.

EFG will contribute to three events during COP31:

9 November | Italy Pavilion: Climate Action: Implementing Transferable Climate Solutions that Endure

19 November | Official UNFCCC Side Event: International Cooperation Safeguarding Sustainable Development in a Changing Arctic

19 November | Italy Pavilion: SOGESID Collaboration, highlighting the SPECS project.

EFG's delegation will be led by Global Ambassador Maureen Gallagher, alongside President David Govoni and External Relations Officer Arda Arcasoy.

Through these activities, EFG will highlight how scientific expertise, effective governance and international partnerships can support climate solutions that are practical, measurable and sustainable over the long term.
