Run your hand across the top. That is ceramic, not laminate.

It does not mark, it does not fade in the sun, and a hot dish can go straight down on it.

Aramis. 160cm out to 200cm, chairs in a choice of colours. £1,499.

The plates are cleared, the kettle is on, and nobody has moved. That only happens when the chairs are comfortable.

The Brianna has six properly padded chairs in soft cream on solid oak legs. Seats six without anyone feeling squeezed.

£599 for the seven piece set.

Four most nights, eight at Christmas. How many are you actually feeding?

The Porthos is 120cm round day to day and opens out to a 160cm oval when you need it. Four chairs included.

£999. Worth seeing it open and closed, because that is the whole point of it.

Most dining tables are fine until real life lands on them.

The Mischa top is sintered stone. Hot pans, spilt red w**e and a week of homework all come off it with a cloth, and it does not scratch.

130cm, extends to 160cm, four chairs. £599.

Look at the base of the chair. Four black legs, and the seat turns on top of them.

That is the bit people notice after a week. Nobody drags a chair backwards to get out, and nobody has to stand up to let someone past.

Benicio. Extending grey top, six swivel chairs, three chair colours to pick from. £1,199.

A round table in a small kitchen is the one that actually works. No corners to squeeze past, no chair you have to shuffle round, and everyone can see everyone.

The Sardinia is 110cm across with four chairs. The top is sintered stone, so it does not scratch or stain and it cleans with a cloth.

£399 for the set. In store and online.

Feet up, coffee on, dog asleep. That is a Monday sorted.

The Portis reclines by hand, so there is no plug and nothing to go wrong. Soft mink plush, and a back that holds its shape instead of swallowing you.
