Before that old furniture goes in a skip, it is worth asking one question: does it really need to?

A surprising amount of office furniture is thrown out with years of life left in it. A chair that feels uncomfortable might just need adjusting. A tired sofa might only need new upholstery. Through our supplier network we can put you in touch with refurbishment and re-upholstery specialists, and when something really has reached the end of the road, our suppliers' take-back schemes help make sure it is disposed of responsibly.

Sometimes the best answer is a new home. When we cleared furniture from a client's refit, chairs like this one went to local schools, where they are back in use.

Remember the desks and chairs we found a new home for?

When we cleared a client's office ahead of a refit, a lot of that furniture still had years of use left in it. So instead of the skip, it went to local schools. Here it is, back in use and still working hard.

With half term next week and plenty of refits about to start, it is a good moment to ask what happens to the old furniture. Wherever we can, we find it a second life.

This breakout area was planned so nobody has to choose. A mix of soft seating and poseur tables, warm colour, and separate zones for a quick chat or some heads-down time, all shaped around how the team actually works.

Happy Monday! It is the last week of term, and you can feel it.

A big shout out today to the business managers, site staff and caretakers who will not be putting their feet up next week. Half term is when the building empties, and it is also when rooms get moved, refreshed and refitted, ready for everyone coming back.

It is a busy week behind the scenes, and it rarely gets noticed. We notice. Know your worth!

Mid-works, the floor boxes are open, the ladders are still up and it is hard to picture what the room will become.

Both of these photos come from the same central London project. On top, the space mid-works. Below, the finished boardroom at handover: slatted timber walling, hexagonal acoustic panels and a long boardroom table with power built in.

Between those two pictures sits every decision, delivery and fixing, handled by one team from first brief to final fit. No subcontractors, and no gaps for the details to fall through.

In education, you do not choose when a refit happens. The academic calendar chooses for you.

Half-term, Christmas, Easter, summer. Every major job has to fit inside a break, and every day of overrun is a day a room is not ready for students. For estates and facilities managers, the biggest risk is rarely the furniture. It is the programme.

Solihull College gave us their summer window to refit eight IT suites. Out went the tired beech desking and worn blue chairs. In went stone-effect desking and mesh-back seating built for all-day use. Our own fitting team delivered all eight suites in three days, ready for September.

That is what one in-house team makes possible: one plan, one programme, and no waiting on another contractor's diary.

Not every important space in a college is a classroom.

This quiet corner at Stratford-upon-Avon College is part of the wider fit-out our team delivered there. Soft modular seating in grey with warm peach backs, tucked in by the window, gives students somewhere to sit for 10 minutes away from a screen.

Spaces like this are easy to leave until last, and easy to get wrong. Planned alongside the rest of the building, they make the whole place feel more considered.

Happy Monday! Where do you sit when you have 20 minutes and a sandwich?

At Solihull College, it might well be this corner of the refectory: bench seating in fresh green, sturdy tables built for everyday use, and a woodland mural that makes it feel a long way from the classroom.

Every table and bench here was specified, delivered and fitted by our own team. No subcontractors, just people who care how a space looks on the first day and how it holds up on the hundredth.

Before you replace a chair, try readjusting it.

Plenty of chairs get written off as uncomfortable when the real problem is that they were never set up for the person sitting in them. Hot-desking makes it worse: the chair is still adjusted for whoever sat there last.

When a new chair really is needed, it is worth asking what it is made of. The Way task chair from MDK Office Seating is made using 68% recycled content. Every component apart from the gas lift is made in the UK, and at the end of its life all of its components can be broken down and recycled.

Keeping a good chair in service, and choosing a responsible one when it is time to replace, are two of the simplest sustainability wins in any building.

Happy Monday! Try this before you open your inbox.

Sit back in your chair. Does the seat height support both the front and the back of your thighs? Is there a gap of 2 to 3cm between the front of the seat and the back of your knees? Is the top of your screen level with your eyes, about an arm's length away?

If you answered no, a couple of minutes with the levers under your seat could make this week a lot more comfortable. Those checks come straight from the Health and Safety Executive's guidance on display screen equipment.
