Home-grown grain can provide a valuable foundation, but it rarely represents the whole ration.

During the mobile mill-and-mix process, complementary ingredients can be incorporated according to the agreed formulation.

These may provide additional protein, minerals, oils, fibre or other nutritional support required by the livestock and available forage.

The combination will differ between farms. A dairy ration, beef finishing feed, pig diet or poultry feed should not be treated as the same recipe with a different label.

Planning a mobile milling visit should include the end of the process as well as the beginning.

Once the ration has been milled and mixed, the finished feed needs to be discharged into a suitable location.

Depending on the farm and agreed arrangements, this may include:
- Feed bins.
- Tote bags.
- Trailers.
- A suitable floor or storage area.

The chosen option needs enough capacity for the batch and should protect the feed from moisture, contamination and avoidable losses.

Good preparation means the finished feed can move efficiently from the mill into the farm’s normal feeding system.

🔍 Mobile Feed Mixing or Mobile Feed Milling—What’s the Difference?

At BW Feeds, most of our customers opt for mobile feed mixing—we mill your on-farm cereals and pulses, then blend them with the feed ingredients and additives you need to create a complete, ready-to-feed ration. Simple, efficient, and tailored to your livestock.

But if you prefer to handle mixing yourself, no problem—we also offer mobile feed milling. We’ll mill your homegrown materials to your spec, and you take it from there.

💡 Whether it’s full feed mixing or just milling, we make sure your feed is fresh, cost-effective, and made exactly how you want it.

📞 Not sure which service suits your setup? Give us a call—we’re happy to help.

How can mobile milling improve feed traceability?

You can see exactly what is going into your feed.

Using our mobile mill and mix service allows you to know exactly what raw materials are going into your feed (you can even watch them going in and being mixed in real-time).

Commercial poultry systems require feed that reflects the birds, production stage and farm requirements.

B&W Feeds can produce conventional and organic feed for chickens and formulate options for other commercial poultry, including turkeys and ducks.

For suitable farms, feed may be produced through the mobile mill-and-mix service using home-grown ingredients. Other businesses may be better served by feed manufactured at the Dorset site.

The route depends on scale, crops, storage, location and the required formulation.
