We are committed to the collection of exceptional pieces of 20th Century Design.

Modernity specializes in curating exceptional 20th Century Design pieces, with a distinct focus on post-war Scandinavian furniture, textiles, ceramics, glass, lighting and jewellery. We collect a wide range of design classics and rarities by designers such as Hans Wegner, Arne Jacobsen, Alvar Aalto, Axel Salto, Berndt Friberg and many more. After moving from Scotland to Sweden and following a career in design retailing, Andrew Duncanson opened Modernity's doors in 1998. In addition to supplying pieces to international collectors and museums, Modernity exhibit regularly at antique and design shows in London, New York and Paris. The gallery is situated on Sibyllegatan in the heart of Stockholm's design district Östermalm. Over the years this showroom has become a meeting place both for local and visiting 20th Century Design enthusiasts. Modernity is a member of the Swedish Art & Antique Association and also of the International Confederation of Art and Antique Dealers CINOA.

Modernity × Tekla

Mid-century Makers at Tekla Marylebone

In partnership with Modernity, Tekla presents a selection of rare and exceptional furniture and objects by some of the most renowned Nordic designers of the 20th century.

Curated by Abel Sloane, the presentation brings together mid-century design and Tekla’s contemporary textiles, creating a dialogue between form, material and colour.

Object of the week — Tray table designed by Rut Bryk for Arabia, Finland, 1946

Between 1944 and 1947, Rut Bryk created a limited series of trays for Arabia, featuring motifs that ranged from still lifes to depictions of life events such as funerals and, as in this case, weddings. Interestingly, Rut Bryk married Tapio Wirkkala in 1945, just one year before the tray in question was made.

These trays were included in several exhibitions during the mid-1940s, among them a notable showing at Nordiska Kompaniet in 1945. Writing about that exhibition in the magazine Form, Åke Stavenow remarked that Bryk had brought her artistic expression to such a level of refinement that further development along the same path seemed almost inconceivable.

Rut Bryk (1916–1999) was a pioneering Finnish ceramic artist and designer renowned for her innovative contributions to modern ceramic art. Born in Stockholm, she studied graphic design in Helsinki before joining the Arabia ceramics factory in 1942. Throughout her career, Bryk received numerous accolades, such as the Grand Prix at the 1951 Milan Triennial and the Pro Finlandia medal in 1962.
