Born on this day in 1910, Eero Saarinen was a major influence on Knoll and the contemporary built environment. After arriving in the U.S. from Finland, he attended the Cranbrook Academy of Art where he became close friends with fellow student Florence Schust (later, Knoll). His early training as a sculptor directly informed his achievements in furniture and architecture, from his Pedestal Collection and Womb Chair to the TWA Terminal and the Gateway Arch. "Compromise comes from a fear of being pure,” he said. “Confusion comes from trying to amalgamate several conflicting ideas. A room is like a piece of art—it is just one idea.”
