Some additional before and after pictures of this 1932 East Sac garage door rebuild.

The doors and all the hardware were actually pretty solid and my preference is always less is more. Something vintage and original has its own value and charm.

Obviously it was necessary to clean up all the hardware and I found a pretty significant problem with one of the hangers. The bearing had failed decades ago and the hanger ended up bent which didn’t allow the roller to really function properly.

The problem with cast iron is that heating and cooling can easily crack it. I took it over to a friend’s blacksmith shop and he heated it up, we gently moved it and then wrapped it in rockwool so it could cool down slowly. In the end, came out perfect.

The other major part of the rebuild which no one is really going to see or notice is that these doors, being board and batten and the hinges only being wood screws into one side of the boards, they tend to sag over the years. To remedy that, I made metal support plates for each corner and I put through bolts to just tighten everything up.

All in all, I’m happy with the results and if you have a challenge like this, let me know, a lot of stuff that contractors want to rip out and replace can actually be repaired and restored. Something to consider 😀

I think I found a way to use up some of the 100’s of extra hinges at the shop 🤔

About 99% done on these 1932 garage doors in East Sacramento. The doors were sagging and the hardware had all been painted over a million times.

I made metal plates for all the joints and put stove bolts instead of just wood screws. Doors can still flex but they’re much more solid. All the hardware was carefully stripped and repainted. They were originally gloss black but are now flat.

Painted the doors for good measure. Only thing left now is to straighten the bent door hanger. If you’ve got original doors like this that you need repair or restoration, let me know.

Couple of new items in the shop. A 1950’s trunk type all metal coca coal cooler. Nice original condition, display as is or good restoration project. Couple of cast iron wall mount candle holders (my best guess).

Also picked up a nice parts cabinet and a shipwright’s adze

Chicken wire glass! 😍😍😍 Don’t miss out, super hard to find in the wild.

Found this yesterday at my last stop of the day in Berkeley. Rule number one when you pick something up is to ask, any thing else you’re getting rid of? Most of the time is a no but every once in a while you score 😀

I would have brought that amazing vintage filing cabinet back to the shop too but the truck was pretty full and I was gassed already. If you’re interested, it’s in Berkeley, let me know and I’ll send you to the seller. Very reasonably priced
