The Outdoor Architect’s Table

With summer well and truly here, it feels like the right moment to talk about outdoor dining. The Harvest Table is our established outdoor design, but the Architect’s Table, the Harris, the Keyworth and the Tapered Leg Tables can all be adapted for outdoor use. All of our outdoor furniture is made from solid Iroko and with specific structural accommodations that make the pieces suitable for life outside.

The Log Server, basking in afternoon light The Makona Project. The Log’s end panels are finished to resemble the raw cross-section of a freshly cut timber log, in reference to the origin of the material and to the process of working with timber at its most elemental.

Perfect afternoon light in the JMFS showroom.

Our showroom, studio and factory are all located at our Calcutta Street premesis, in Cape Town’s industrial district of Paarden Eiland.

With an ever-changing selection of pieces, our showroom is open to visitors, by appointment. If you’d like to come and experience it in person, please get in touch to arrange your visit.

The Windsor Chair in the making.

The Windsor is one of the oldest chair designs in the Western furniture tradition. Making it well requires a different set of skills from most of what happens in this factory: steam bending, spindle turning, compound angles that have to be accurate before the chair can stand properly. It is one of the more demanding things the studio makes, and one of the most satisfying to watch come together.

Here in the workshop, there are multiple pieces at multiple stages of the manufacture process, with parts in multiple places at any given time. It’s work that requires breakproof systems, exceptional communication, consistent quality checking and a little bit of madness.

Dressing by design. Our Harris Dresser in Walnut, sitting softly in a warm, textural interior designed and styled by Aesthete Collective.

The characteristic rounded edges of the Harris family carry through the room in the curves of the mirror frame, the chair and the gently hung curtains. It’s a subtle visual thread that holds the space together without announcing itself and one that shows careful consideration of the experience of space.

A short film from the factory floor documenting the assembly and finishing of the Articulated Dining Table.

One of the more technically demanding pieces in the collection, the Articulated Table features a thick, solid wood top and a carefully engineered asymmetrical base, held together by joinery that is fitted with precision at every stage.

A painted finish opens up a whole new conversation between the furniture and the space it lives in. Barstools in a deep burgundy or buttery yellow at a kitchen counter. A dining table in hot red or Yves Klein Blue. Our painted finish is applied over solid timber, in multiple coats, which means it has the depth to carry a strong colour and the durability to keep it.

At the breakfast counter or around the bar, the Four Legged Barstool is a design that does exactly what it sets out to do. Through solid timber, clean geometry and four slender legs tapering to the floor, it’s a simple design that really carries its weight. And yours.
