This eight-seater dining table measures 2.4 m × 1.1 m and is handcrafted from French Oak. It has been finished using products, enhancing the timber’s natural warmth, grain and character while giving it a good protection.

One hundred per cent of the auction proceeds will be donated to CANSA.

Here are a few more photographs and details of “The Fran,” my entry in the Rubio Monocoat Heritage Build-Off 2026, highlighting the flowing shapes and organic details incorporated into the table.

It is a privilege to participate alongside 12 other talented woodworkers in a competition that celebrates creativity and craftsmanship while supporting an important cause. One hundred per cent of the auction proceeds will be donated to CANSA.

Rather than joining the French oak boards along traditional straight edges, I created natural-looking, flowing lines between them. These organic joints celebrate the natural beauty and character of the timber while creating an ideal surface on which to showcase the Rubio Monocoat product range.

Durbanville woodworker selected to auction in prestigious competition Durbanville woodworker Morris Knudsen has been selected for the Rubio Monocoat Heritage Build-Off Auction, raising funds for CANSA.

I am incredibly excited and honoured to have been selected to participate in the Rubio Monocoat Heritage Build-Off Auction 2026.

Rubio Monocoat is a company and product range that I know well and have trusted in my furniture-making for many years. This build gave me a rare opportunity to design and create something entirely from my own imagination.

Beginning with a completely open brief was both exciting and challenging, allowing the design to develop naturally throughout the creative process.

I chose to create an eight-seater dining table from French oak. I love the warmth, character and old-world charm of this beautiful timber—particularly when it is used to create fresh, modern designs. Blending the old with the new is something I enjoy incorporating into both the design and manufacture of our furniture.

In the spirit of celebrating South Africa’s Heritage Month, I chose to create a table because it represents a place where we gather. As South Africans, so many of our most meaningful moments happen around a table—with family, friends, good food, generous hospitality and shared memories.

I have named the design “The Fran”

Before the polished photographs, there was plenty of shaping, sanding, fitting and fine-tuning in the workshop.

The Hanlie Dining Chair is locally crafted from solid French Oak, with every component carefully considered. From the sculpted backrest and curved lines to the unique exposed joinery, each detail reflects the time and craftsmanship that goes into creating a chair that is both beautiful and comfortable.

Finished with Oil Plus 2C to enhance the natural grain and protect the timber for years to come.

The Hanlie is available to order in a selection of timbers and finish colours to complement your space.
