𝐀 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐠𝐲’𝐬 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 - 𝐴 𝑝𝑜𝑟𝑡𝑓𝑜𝑙𝑖𝑜 𝑜𝑓 21 𝑙𝑖𝑛𝑜𝑐𝑢𝑡𝑠 𝑏𝑦 𝐿𝑢𝑐𝑎𝑠 𝐵𝑎𝑚𝑏𝑜

We are delighted to present an exhibition of 21 linocut prints by Lucas Bambo, created for 𝐀 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐠𝐲’𝐬 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠, the biography of master mbira player, Cosmos Magaya, by ethnomusicologist Paul Berliner.

Commissioned as chapter illustrations for the book, the prints draw on Bambo’s visit to Zimbabwe, where he met renowned mbira master Cosmas Magaya and experienced the traditions and communities that shaped his life. These striking linocuts offer a visual journey through Magaya’s upbringing, musical legacy, and the cultural world of the mbira.

Currently on show at Tokara Wine and Olive Estate, Stellenbosch. All works are for sale, available as a full set or individual prints.

The ‘A Prodigy’s calling’ portfolio consists of 21 linocuts by Lucas Bambo, printed for the book by Paul F. Berliner, about legendary mbira player, Cosmas Magaya.

The images were used as the cover image of Cosmos standing with mbira, plus the 20 chapter headings. Each is hand-printed in a limited edition of 50, signed and numbered by Lucas Bambo. It is available to purchase as a complete portfolio or as individual linocuts.

The full portfolio is on exhibition as part of Compositions (and all that jazz) at Tokara Wine and Olive Estate.

The book was published in October 2024 and is available to purchase through the University of Chicago Press or other bookstores, in paperback, hardcover and e-book formats.

This past weekend, we had the delight of linking up with Sam and Tom at Tokara Wine & Olive Farm, who share a love of music, art, and music in art. When asked "Why music?", Sam responded with, "Jazz is my oxygen!"

Tom Cullberg has also exhibited at Tokara Wine and Olive Estate, and it was wonderful to see the two artists connect and share stories over a glass of wine. Tom is also a fan of Miles Davis, and we see him here standing next to the portrait by Sam.

We hope to see more of these special connections!
