Fitting a big family gathering around a standard dining table is usually just a math problem that doesn't work.

But we’ve never really let square footage limit how we host. When the table runs out of room, we just lay out some cushions, and let the floor do the rest of the hosting. There’s freedom for everyone to sit wherever they want and actually chill.

Good things take time. Great things also apparently take a lot of freight shipping.

Tatami goes through a genuinely tedious process — from harvesting the Igusa grass all the way to the handcrafting — before it even gets packed up and shipped across the world. It's not a quick or cheap journey. Once you know that, the price actually starts to make sense.

At a regular dining table, we’re kind of "performing" dinner. We stay in our seats, mind our posture, and there’s always that physical barrier between us and everyone else.

But on the floor, the rules disappear. We can lean in, stretch out, and actually be ourselves. It’s not just because of the extra space, but because of the open togetherness that happens when we’re all on the same level.
