A tired-looking office doesn't always need new furniture.

Every open office has a number almost nobody has heard of: its distraction radius.

It's the distance at which a normal conversation stops being understandable, and there's an international standard for measuring it (ISO 3382-3). On a well-designed floor it's 5 meters or less. On a bad one it's over 10, which means one phone call can pull focus from nearly every desk in the room.

The volume isn't the problem. The words are. Your brain can tune out HVAC hum, but it can't ignore speech it can understand.

What actually shrinks it: sound-absorbing ceilings, screen height and placement, glass walls and focus rooms where people take calls, and furniture layout that breaks up the line of sight.
