Congratulations to our Woldmarsh Member, James Casswell for winning the Diversification of the Year award for Eco Green Compost in the British Farming Awards.

Please join us in congratulating James Casswell, named Small/Medium Diversification of the year!

Lincolnshire farmer James Casswell is transforming a traditionally intensive 1,300-hectare arable business through a pioneering compost venture that is helping improve soils, biodiversity and farm resilience.

The family farm predominantly grows wheat, barley, beans, peas and oilseed r**e, but since launching compost production in 2021, James has broadened the rotation to include 100 hectares of green covers and eight hectares of willow on previously unfarmable wet ground.

What began as a way to address high fertiliser costs and improve organic matter has developed into a peat-free compost business, supported by Lincoln University and a major garden centre franchise. The farm now operates its own bagging line, creating a closed-loop system from growing and processing to finished product, all within five miles.

The diversification has driven a wider change in mindset, with James now believing growth means creating better land rather than simply acquiring more. Both enterprises benefit from healthier soils, improved water management and greater environmental focus.

Congratulations to Woldmarsh Member Colin Chappell, who has been named Farmers Weekly’s Environmental Champion of the Year 2026! 🏆

Colin’s award recognises his commitment to improving soil health, reducing the farm’s carbon footprint and creating space for nature, with more than 25% of the farm dedicated to environmental measures.

From improved nitrogen use efficiency and reduced fuel use, to encouraging biodiversity and seeing wildlife return to the farm’s ditches, Colin’s work demonstrates how environmental stewardship can go hand in hand with productive and resilient farming.

We’re proud to see one of our members recognised for the work he is doing to support the future of farming and the environment.

We spoke to Colin this morning on the phone and he quotes 'Knowledge is key in this industry and I have honestly learnt so much from other people'

Congratulations, Colin! 🌾
